Music as a Subject

Music is offered as a subject choice in the Senior School from Grade 8 to Matric.

Instrumental tuition is offered in Piano, Organ, Recorder, Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Oboe, Bassoon, Trumpet, Euphonium, Horn, Trombone and Tuba. 


GRADE 8 and 9

Pupils must choose between Class Music and Subject Music. Those with an interest in doing music are encouraged to join the Subject Music class.

Class Music
This course is less technical and more general in nature. At present the curriculum is issues-based, orientated towards music in its social, historical and political context. 

Subject Music
Subject Music is intended for those who would like to learn to play an instrument and include music in their academic programme. 

The course includes basic music notation, sight-singing and composition and a practical  component is chosen from the list above.


GRADE 10, 11 and 12

Subject Music may begin in Grade 10.

Follows the four learning outcomes of the National Senior Certificate viz.
      Music Performance and Presentation
      Improvisation, Arrangement and Composition
      Music Literacies
      Critical Reflection

The required practical standard for Matric is Grade V (UNISA, ABRSM,
         Trinity Guildhall)

Matric requirements are:
      A final Performance Examination
      Written Examination
      Portfolio Tasks
