The Kneen Window

North ambulatory / sanctuary - Unveiled 15 February 1970 in the presence of members of the Kneen family.

It depicts the beloved disciple with the 'Blinded Eagle' in the lower quarter set opposite the South African Air Force badge.

This is a significant and happy touch that will not be lost on those who remember the brilliance and the bright spirit that was John Kneen, who was killed in an air disaster at Nairobi in November 1940.

The 'Blinded Eagle' is the heraldic symbol for St John, whom, the Fathers of the Church held, wrote a Gospel which comes closer to the light of Christ than any other. In a mythical contest among the birds to settle who could fly highest it was the eagle who flew so close to the sun that it was blinded.
