Brian Baker 1st Girls Water Polo Tournament

Brian Baker Water Polo Tournament 2017

Kingswood College once again hosted a successful edition of the annual Brian Baker Water Polo tournament this last weekend. The first game of the tournament was played early on Friday afternoon, while the final came to an exciting conclusion at 17h00 on Sunday. This 1st Team Girls’ tournament has become a favorite amongst teams both within the Eastern Cape as well as from all around South Africa. The main reason for this almost certainly being it’s very grueling format – where teams end up playing 6-8 full length (4 periods of 8 minutes ‘playing time’) matches in a weekend.

The following teams took part in this year’s tournament:

Clarendon, Hudson Park & Stirling (East London)

Pearson, Alexander Road & Collegiate (Port Elizabeth)

Glenwood House  (SWD)

St Dominic’s (Johannesburg)

Reddam House & Somerset College (Cape Town)

DSG & Kingswood (Grahamstown)

This year’s event was tightly contested with several of the teams standing a very good chance of emerging as the overall winner. Pearson & Stirling, playing some outstanding water polo, emerged out of the pool stages as the two strongest teams. The two impressive teams met each other in the final for the first time – with Stirling coming out on top with a 9-8 score line and winning it in the last minute! Both teams are to be congratulated for the manner in which they competed as well as the level of water polo they played throughout the tournament.

The host team, Kingswood College, played some very committed water polo and certainly earned the respect of their various opponents throughout the weekend. On the first day Kingswood competed well, earning a hard fought 5-5 draw against newcomers St Dominic’s. Kingswood then played Hudson Park in the last game of the first day. The game proved to be exactly what the passionate Kingswood spectators wanted - the host team played well to beat Hudson Park with a very convincing 15-3 end result.

The next day saw Kingswood lose to eventual winners Stirling 5-9; beat Alex Road 12-3 and also beat Collegiate 13-5 before losing to a very clinical Reddam House team 5-11 in what was a tough but positive day of water polo for the host team. On the last day of the event Kingswood beat Glenwood House 9-4, before losing to Collegiate 4-5 in another tightly contested play-off match, 6th/12 overall. The 2017 tournament was again a great success for water polo in the country and a ‘feather’ in the host school’s ‘cap’!
