News » John Birch visits Kingswood College

16th May 2017

We have a special visitor to our campus today, Mr John Birch who became the Choirmaster and Organist at Kingswood in 1969 (just after the Chapel was built) and was appointed as the Director of Music in 1970.

Birch was the first Director of Music at Kingswood College and coincided with the building of the Chapel Organ. He was responsible for buying various instruments and founded the school orchestra. He also established the Kingswood College Chapel Choir, had them robed and took them on two or three tours. The choir became RSCM (Royal School of Church Music) members, and the Eastern Cape branch of the RSCM was resurrected, and at least two Summer Schools were held at Kingswood College with overseas directors.

It has been wonderful to welcome John Birch back to Kingswood!
