News » National Youth Wind Orchestra to perform at Kingswood

19th June 2017

The National Youth Wind Orchestra will be performing an array of fun Fantasia-inspired music, from Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite to Dukas’ The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, and will be conducted by National Youth Orchestra alumnus and Kingswood music teacher, Prof. David Scarr. Two Kingswoodians, Maka Makoni and Georgia Cadle, both clarinet students of Mrs. Jenny Brand, have been selected for the National Youth Wind Orchestra 2017.

Hundreds of young musicians audition for a coveted place in the South African National Youth Orchestra and a select few are chosen to form the green and gold national team each year. The orchestra’s legacy spans over half a century, and is far reaching with representation of alumni in top professional orchestras in South Africa and across the globe. They have performed with a host of local and international stars, including Archbishop Tutu, Sir Roger Norrington and Sir James Galway.

The concert will be on 8 July at 18:30 at the Kingswood Chapel and will be fun for the whole family. Donations at the door will go towards a bursary for a musician from Grahamstown to take part in the orchestra course.
