Scholarship Criteria
Applying for a 2023 Scholarship
Please note that only pupils going into Grade 8 or Grade 10 (or Grade 9 for the Trevor Stewart Scholarship) in 2023 are eligible for these scholarships. Closing date for applications will be on Friday, 11 February 2022.
To apply please follow these steps:
- Review the criteria for each scholarship to confirm that your child meets the basic requirements
- Fill out an application form (click here to download)
- Attach all supporting documentation set out in the criteria as well as December 2020 and 2021 School reports, and copies of all music examination certificates and reports.
- Note that only a child or grandchild of an Old Kingswoodian qualifies to apply for the Trevor Stewart Scholarship and the Financial Needs assessment will also need to be completed for the application.

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend assessments on Friday, 18 February 2022 as part of the second stage of the application process. If you have not received a response by 17 February 2022 please consider your application unsuccessful.
Academic Scholarship
Partial scholarship covering a percentage of the tuition and/or boarding fees.
- Currently achieving 75% or above in Mathematics and English.
- Candidate will need to maintain a satisfactory aggregate in English and Maths annually in order to maintain their scholarship for the following year
- A copy of the December 2020 and 2021 School Report.
- A copy of the pupil’s birth certificate.
- CV of extramural activities and achievements.
- A personal handwritten motivational letter.
Sport Scholarship
Partial scholarship covering a percentage of the tuition and/or boarding fees.
- A copy of the December 2020 and 2021 School Report.
- A copy of the pupil’s birth certificate.
- CV of extramural activities detailing achievements.
- Scholarships are only offered in sports that are offered at the College.
- Must compete at a provincial/regional level for at least one sport to be considered.
- Must play A team for, or excel in, at least one other sport to be considered.
- The candidate’s academic performance will be taken into account.
- A personal handwritten motivational letter.
Music Scholarship
Partial scholarship covering a percentage of the tuition and/or boarding fees.
- Currently achieving 75% or above in Mathematics and English.
- A copy of the December 2020 and 2021 School Report.
- A copy of the pupils’ birth certificate.
- CV of extramural activities and achievements.
- Copies of all music examination certificates and reports.
- Participation in at least one music ensemble (choir and/or band).
- A personal handwritten motivational letter.
- Grade 8 applicants:
- Completion of Grade 3 practical examination (UNISA, ABRSM or TCL) in an instrument of their choice, as well as the completion of Grade 2 theory of music examination.
- The successful applicant must take music as a subject from Grade 8 to Grade 12
- Grade 10 applicants:
- Completion of Grade 4 practical examination (UNISA, ABRSM or TCL) in an instrument of their choice, as well as the completion of Grade 3 theory of music examination.
- The successful applicant must take music as a subject from Grade 10 to Grade 12.
Makhanda Closed Scholarship
Full scholarship covering 100% of the tuition fees (excludes boarding fees).
- The applicant must be a resident of Makhanda (Grahamstown).
- Currently achieving 80% or above in Mathematics and English.
- A copy of the December 2020 and 2021 School Report.
- A copy of the pupils’ birth certificate.
- CV of extramural activities and achievements.
- A personal handwritten motivational letter.

Criteria
Trevor Stewart Scholarship
Full scholarship covering 100% tuition & boarding fees
To qualify, the applicant must: (a) be a South African citizen; (b) the child or grandchild of an alumnus (Old Kingswoodian); (c) apply for Grade 8, 9 or 10 in 2023. Furthermore, parents and/or guardians need to submit a financial needs’ assessment demonstrating financial need.
Criteria:
- Currently achieving 70% or more academic aggregate.
- Commit to community involvement through the community engagement programme.
- Participate in the College’s co-curricular programme, including the enrichment component.
- Participate in leadership and outdoor education activities.
- Have personal characteristics of integrity, diligence and honesty.
- Have leadership potential.
- To be considered for this scholarship, applications need to meet abovementioned criteria and include:
- A copy of the pupil’s birth certificate.
- A copy of the December 2020 and 2021 school reports.
- CV of extramural activities and achievements.
- A personal handwritten motivational letter.
- Financial needs assessment.
