Adventure Based Leadership and Education

A time to explore and enjoy

The Eastern Cape is home to some of the finest wilderness areas in South Africa. Grahamstown lies at the heart of this with access to the coast and the mountain ranges of the Eastern Karoo uplands. There are not many places in South Africa with a greater variety of habitats right on your doorstep. At Kingswood we believe that learning outside the classroom is just as important as the learning that happens inside the classroom and with this in mind, we place emphasis and great importance on our Adventure Based Leadership and Education (ABLE) programme.

Through the programme, there are not only endless opportunities for our pupils to develop and discover new talents,  it also provides a means for us to instil a meaningful love of the environment and the outdoors and encourage healthy active lifestyles. Leadership, technical skills, self-awareness, character and grit are also just some of the skills that are focused on throughout the programme.

The Adventure Based Leadership and Education (ABLE) programme is divided into three strands:

  • Outdoor skills – the outdoor skills component includes things such as camping, bushcraft, first aid and rescue, mountain safety and water safety.
  • Leadership and followership – team building, adventure-based learning (abseiling, tree climbing, water crossing, rope climbs etc), problem-solving, leadership/mentorship skills.
  • Applied curriculum – this includes academic, pastoral and physical education aspects of the school curriculum.
