Welcome to the Music School

“Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and life to everything” – Plato

At the Music School we are inclusive and ambitious and we have a vision that all pupils will consider taking part in some sphere of our music programme. There has always been a vibrant tradition of music at Kingswood College since its foundation in 1894, and we hope to continue to grow and build on this legacy.

The Music School, established in 1996, is home to seven music teachers and the many pupils who cross its threshold every week. Our music programme is a full one, with a wide-ranging series of concerts taking place throughout the academic year, ranging from solo recitals to large-scale concerts both on and off our campus.

We wish to cultivate a space where every pupil at Kingswood is given the opportunity to play music and use it as a means to express themselves. We offer a very wide variety of instruments such as the flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, saxophones, trumpet, trombone, french horn, tuba, euphonium, violin, cello, double bass, piano and organ. All instruments are taught by specialized teachers in each field.

Each and every music pupil takes part in a band or ensemble group during their tuition in order to help them develop self-discipline, self-confidence and teamwork. Music has been proven to develop the mind, body, coordination of motor skills and build imagination.

Our philosophy in the department is to be teachers that are MUSIC:

M = Motivating, U  = Understanding, S = Supportive, I =  Invested, C = Creative

Please join on our musical adventure

Warm regards,
Ms Nici Coleman
Director of Music

Performances

Sundowners are held on Thursdays at 16h45. Pupils are encouraged to perform their solo pieces in this informal non-intimidating space. These concerts also provide our pupils with a space to learn proper concert etiquette and support their fellow peers.

The First Band and the Concert Band perform regularly for school functions as well as for the community and are actively involved in some fundraiser concerts.
