The annual K-Day celebrations last week included the reunions of the Classes of 1984, 1994, 2004 and 2014. The weekend was spent reminiscing, laughing and celebrating Kingswood bonds.

On Thursday the 13th of June, the 10, 20, 30 and 40 year reunion groups returned to Kingswood for their respective reunions. The reunion began for some at the Legends Golf Day, where perfect golfing weather conditions were enjoyed by all.

Registration took place up at the Wyvern, where a lovely meal prepared by Joey and Garth (OK 1994) Bradfield treated us to a delicious meal. The evening’s festivities carried on late into the night as classmates shared stories, and enjoyed special time together.

On Friday morning the classes arrived at the Kingswood Museum for a champagne brunch. Invited guests, including the College Head – Leon Grove, Senior Head – Tracy van Molendorff, President of the OK Club – Chris Hobson (OK 1990), Vice Chair of Council and Active Vice President of the OK Club – Richard Gaybba (OK 2001), past san sister – Ellen Clark, Hon OK – Shirley Fletcher and much-loved Kingswood Dr and Honorary Life Vice-President of the OK Club – Dr Fred Oosthuizen where also in attendance.

A very special award was also made during the brunch, when Sister Eva Junkin was awarded with Honorary Old Kingswoodian status. This moving presentation was made poignant by the presence of many of the children that Eva looked after whilst they were at Kingswood.

After the brunch, the group went on a campus tour, where they were able to visit their old houses, and share stories of their time on campus. The afternoon was spent supporting old boys and girls matches as well as school sport. The evening at the Wyvern was filled with Kingswood pride, as the school came up and performed the traditional war cries.

On Saturday, the reunion groups supported various sporting events at St Andrews, Prep as well as DSG. The vibe around Makhanda was palpable, and it was wonderful that the reunion groups could be a part of it.

Thanks must be made to each and every one of the class groups who made the effort to attend their reunions. A special vote of thanks to Celeste du Toit (OK 2014), Fanie van der Westhuyzen (OK 2014), Kathryn Els (OK 2004), Shane Turner (OK 2004), Greg Brown (OK 1994), Derek Whitfield (OK 1984) and Jann von Bulow (OK 1984) for all their efforts to reach people, and encourage them to attend their reunion.

It was certainly a weekend to remember. We look forward to welcoming you back to Kingswood in the not-too-distant future!
