Madison Edwards Awarded Honours For Tennis
Congratulations to Madison Edwards who was awarded Honours for Tennis at this morning’s Awards Assembly.
When Madison joined Kingswood in Grade 8, her reputation as a tennis player of note preceded her; she had already been ranked number two in the country in the various age groups. Her reputation as an exceptional tennis player was endorsed when she made an immediate impact on the school’s tennis team and indeed the tennis programme as a whole. It did not take her long to meet all the challenges to become number one in the school, retaining this position for her whole school career except when injured. Madison’s record of never having lost a match to another Kingswood pupil during her school career will probably not be broken for a very long time.
During her time at Kingswood, Madison has been selected for both the South African U15 and U17 sides and represented the Eastern Province on numerous occasions. In addition, her contribution to Kingswood tennis has resulted in our teams being more successful than ever before. Kingswood College is now a force to be reckoned with at tournaments, especially at the Independent Schools Tournament.
However, Madison is not just a tennis player. She is a rare athlete. She has not limited herself to only tennis but has enjoyed the smorgasbord of sport offered at Kingswood, excelling on the hockey field and in the water polo pool, while continuing to work hard at her tennis. She has been committed to training six days a week and made every effort to play in all the major tournaments around the country, which are often held during the school holidays.
Madison has always adopted a professional approach to training. When she recently underwent surgery for a knee injury, she continued to work in the gym and on her overall fitness to ensure that she is back to full strength for the tournament season this year.
At Kingswood, ‘Madison Edwards’ and ‘tennis’ are inseparably linked. Her contribution to the school, to the province and to SA tennis are highly valued and it gives us great pleasure to present Honours for Tennis to Madison Edwards, a truly deserving recipient.
