For the first time, Kingswood alumni are eligible to apply for the prestigious St Andrew’s College Rhodes Scholarship, opening the door to one of the world’s most respected postgraduate scholarships at the University of Oxford.

Many will know this simply as the Rhodes Scholarship. Historically, the St Andrew’s College Rhodes Scholarship was only open to pupils from St Andrew’s College and its partner school, DSG.

Following a landmark agreement between the Rhodes Trust and the four South African Schools that hold Rhodes Scholarships, the eligibility criteria have been expanded to address UK equality legislation while preserving the historic identity and heritage of each School Scholarship.

As a result, the St Andrew’s College Rhodes Scholarship is now open to graduates from any high school within the Makana Local Municipality, as well as graduates of Rhodes University.

Applicants are eligible if they:
• Matriculated from any high school within the Makana Local Municipality (Classes of 2020–2023); and/or
• Are graduates of Rhodes University; and
• Are under the age of 24 and meet the Rhodes Scholarship’s academic, leadership and service criteria.

This is a significant and historic change, creating an opportunity for outstanding young people from across Makhanda, including Kingswood Old Kingswoodians, to compete for one of the world’s most prestigious scholarships.

Applications for the 2027 intake close on 3 August 2026. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to an all-expenses-paid interview in Cape Town in September.
