“In unison, they spoke of a giant of a man who had, through his service to others, helped shape the lives of countless people…”
On Sunday 14 March 2021, Kingswood College will be hosting a ceremony to acknowledge and pays tribute to the life of Reverend Dr Simon Gqubule. On this day, the name of Burton Street, which runs through the Kingswood College campus, will be changed to Reverend Dr Simon Gqubule Avenue.
Good will come to him who is generous and lends freely, who conducts his affairs with justice.
Psalm 112:5-6
Surely he will never be shaken; a righteous man will be remembered forever.
As a College, this momentous day will forever be etched in the hearts and minds of Kingswoodians – past and present, young and old. The Reverend Dr Gqubule, who served for 10 years on the Kingswood College Council had a deep love for our school.
He was a distinguished academic who also served as the Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church. Throughout his life he was an advocate for many social justice issues that we as a school hold dear such as diversity, equality, justice and transformation. He was not only passionate about teaching young minds but was also passionate about shaping character, turning hearts towards Christ, and through Him being a transforming influence on society.
His life, teachings and legacy represent a beacon whose light must never die. A righteous man, who must be remembered.
Kingswood College acknowledges and pays tribute to the life of Dr Simon Gqubule a true “patriot” of the Methodist Church, education and his country, South Africa.
