Our Grade 9s have just completed a short programming course using Lego EV3 units as a reinforcement of the programming fundamentals, such as loops, conditions and variables.
LEGO® MINDSTORMS® Education EV3 Core Set is a hands-on, cross-curricular STEM solution that engages students by providing the resources to design, build and program their creations while helping them develop essential skills such as creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and communication. A Core Set supports two students and comes with a getting-started guide, video tutorials, and standards-aligned lesson plans. An eLearning program is included for educators.

This might sound a bit hectic, especially to those of us who have not done any programming, however, Mr Martin Tweddle has strived to make it a fun and easy to access medium for our pupils.
Once all the theory had been learnt, Mr Tweddle and the Grade 9s decided to put their own spin on it…
The skills gained throughout the course were put into action, allowing a robot to seek and destroy other robots. Once programmed, all the robots were put into an arena to see which group managed to code the best program in a cutthroat winner takes all battle. The results brought both unbridled joy and utter dismay in equal parts!
