At the start of the 2023 year, Kingswood hosted our second annual pre-season Water Polo Clinic from 13 – 14 January 2023.

Last year the clinic was open to a full age compliment of water polo players. This year, we decided to shift our focus to junior players, which meant that the clinic aimed at girls in the U10 – U13 age divisions.

The clinic ran alongside the Cricket Clinic, which was also put together with younger players in mind. This year saw a wonderful turn out with water polo girls from all over the Eastern Cape flocking to our campus to take part in this two-day clinic.

As a school we were honoured to have Ms Paige and Ms Chloe Meecham join us for this clinic. Chloe is an Olympic Water Polo Player, while her sister Paige is a South African Water Polo Coach/Senior Ladies Assistant Coach. To have individuals of this calibre able to join us to impart their knowledge with us was a true privilege. Their vast knowledge of the game was an invaluable asset to this clinic.

The purpose of a clinic of this nature is to equip players with skills which to tackle the season ahead. They worked on various aspects of play including, but not limited to attack, defense and body movement as well as game sense. These skills were then expanded upon during the match part of the clinic. Players were able to put to test the skills learnt throughout the clinic.

The first day of water polo clinic covered the basics and fundamentals of the game from how to move correctly in the water to passing and shooting the ball. The second day saw players working on decision-making skills in various game scenarios. The girls were then drafted into teams to play in a quadrangular format tournament.

It was fantastic to see how the girls grew as players over the course of the two days and we are sure that the skills and lessons learnt at this clinic will stand them in good stead as they go into the full summer water polo season.
