The first Kingswoodian Club get-togethers of 2023 in the Western Cape took place last week. These included a luncheon in the winelands as well as a meet and greet at The Cape Town Sixes. Great fun was had by all.
On Thursday the 23rd – a luncheon at the beautiful Guardian Peaks wine estate outside Stellenbosch took place. This was attended by about 30 Kingswoodians, some of whom travelled from as far afield as Greyton, Wellington and Paarl. A great time was had by all and plans are already afoot for a follow-up function in the not too distant future. Our thanks to Don Schoeman (OK 1974) and Wendy Dold (OK 1980) for the huge effort that they put into achieving this amazing attendance. They spent many hours on the phone encouraging fellow OKs to attend – I have no doubt that our numbers at these functions will grow now that word has got out that they are such fun.
The Cape Town Sixes, a cricket event run by Ryan Christian (OK 1992) has become a fixture on the Cape Town entertainment calendar. This year we entered an OK team to take part in this two-day event that took place at the Western Province CC. Our thanks to Josh Smuts (OK 2012) who put together a young and fit OK team that actually ended up winning through to the semi-finals in their section. A casual drinks evening was arranged for OKs to join the cricketers at the Western Province Cricket Club on Friday evening. It the invitation was circulated a couple of times but unfortunately the turnout was poor. However, it was an absolute privilege to have two of our “senior” OKs pop in for a few pints – Rein Badings (OK 1955) and Wally Wood (OK 1954) kept the young OKs entertained as they regaled stories from yesteryear. Jack Mills (OK 2019) was particularly touched when he found out that his late Grandfather, John Mills (OK 1951) , was Rein’s mentor way back in the 50’s.
The Western Cape Branch is planning a golf day for later in the year so please be on the look out for information about this event that will be circulated shortly.
