Proud Old Kingswoodian, Kayleigh Smith (OK 2023) is proving that passion and purpose can go hand in hand, as she becomes both a published author and entrepreneur.
Having only matriculated two years ago, Kayleigh has just released her debut fantasy novel, The People Unseen; an imaginative and thought-provoking story that explores themes of injustice, identity, and self-discovery. The novel follows Zahra, a gifted girl living in a society where people like her (known as geseen) are rare and persecuted. As she finds four other teens like herself, their bond forms a powerful “found family,” and together they navigate the dangers of a world that fears them. When one of them vanishes during a daring mission, Zahra’s world, and everything she thought she knew, is turned upside down.
Available both internationally and nationally, The People Unseen is already gaining attention for its compelling characters, immersive world-building, and emotionally resonant themes.
In addition to her literary success, Kayleigh is also the co-founder of New Hat Media, a dynamic social media management agency she launched with her sister earlier this year. The company has quickly grown to serve both local and international clients, a reflection of Kayleigh’s entrepreneurial energy and creative vision.
Kayleigh matriculated in 2023, and was the recipient of the prestigious Neil Aggett Award in 2022, which recognises pupils at Kingswood who foster the spirit of “individual service above self” at Kingswood College. It honours pupils who have shown true commitment to social responsibility and standing up for social injustice within the College, as well as the greater community of Makhanda (Grahamstown). Kayleigh was also the Head of Kingswood’s Student Christian Association, a prefect and a keen ballroom dancer – to name but a few of her achievements! With a successful school career, it is no surprise that Kayleigh is doing great things after school!
Kingswood celebrates these wonderful achievements with Kayleigh, and looks forward to following what we are sure will be a hugely successful venture! Congratulations Kayleigh!
