Knighting ceremony.
At the Junior Chapel Service on the 15th of Ocotber 2025, Old Kingwoodian and current Kingswood College teacher and parent, Liza-Mari McLean gave the keynote address at this significant occasion when all the new (Junior School) pupils are officially “knighted”. Grade by grade the pupils come up to the stage where the Grade 7 Good Fellowship Award winners gently tap the sword on their shoulders.
This special event has been part of Kingswood College for many, many years. It began as a way to welcome new pupils into the Kingswood family – to say, “You belong here.”
A real sword was donated by an Old Kingswoodian, Mr Roy Hart, and it was given the name Sir Truscott. This is the same sword we use today to dub our new Bugs as Old Bugs.
Each new Bug kneels before the dubber and hears the special words:
“New Bug, I dub thee Old Bug – arise, a true Kingswoodian.”
It is a moment filled with pride, honour, and belonging. From that moment on, you’re not just a Kingswood pupil; you’re part of the Kingswood story.
Lize-Mari told the pupils; “It is traditions like this that make Kingswood feel like home.
They remind us that we are part of something much bigger than ourselves — something that connects generations of Kingswoodians across time. “
So to our new Bugs being knighted today — welcome.
You are officially part of the Kingswood family.
May you wear your Old Bug title with pride, kindness, and courage.
The new Grade 7s will have their ceremony at their final Leavers dinner later this year.
