On Saturday, 6 September 2025, Kingswood hosted a truly historic black-tie dinner in the Writing Room of the iconic Lord’s Cricket Pavilion, a landmark dating back to 1890. It was a fitting venue for an event celebrating Kingswood’s proud 131-year heritage—an environment steeped in tradition, much like the College itself.
Guests were welcomed with a refreshing Pimms in the Bowlers Bar, where the convivial spirit of the evening was immediately evident. Old Kingswoodians and friends mingled with ease, sharing fond memories of their school days while enjoying the spectacular view over the Lord’s cricket oval.
Soon after, attendees gathered in the world-famous Long Room for a group photograph captured by Orde Eliason (OK 1974). This photograph is sure to become a treasured record in Kingswood’s annals, symbolising the bond shared by generations of Old Kingswoodians.
Master of ceremonies Ross Purdon (OK 1979) then led guests down to the Writing Room. Elegantly furnished and adorned with celebrated cricketing artworks, the venue provided a distinguished setting for the sumptuous dinner served by the Lord’s catering team. The atmosphere throughout the evening was one of pride and gratitude – pride in Kingswood’s traditions, and gratitude for the privilege of celebrating them in such an extraordinary venue.
The evening’s keynote speakers reflected the breadth of Kingswood’s community. Former England cricketer Allan Lamb entertained with his stories from the sporting world. College Head, Mr. Leon Grové, spoke to Kingswood’s vision for the future. But it was Old Kingswoodian Everisto Chabalanda (OK 2013) who stole the evening. Everisto, who rose from humble beginnings on the banks of the Zambezi to qualify as a chartered accountant in London, delivered a deeply moving address. With candour and passion, he attributed his success to the life lessons he had learned at Kingswood. His words held the audience spellbound and earned him a well-deserved standing ovation.
The formalities continued with the OK Club President, Chris Hobson (OK 1990), who proposed the toast to Kingswood. Drawing from the school hymn, he reminded all present that “we are watchers of a beacon whose light must never die,” a sentiment that resonated deeply with the assembled guests.
It was also incredibly special to have four of our past Head Boys present at the function, including Chris Hobson (1990), Nick Gailey (2011), Dr Morné Wolmarans (1989) and our most recent alumnus, 2024 Head Boy Munangi Kamwendo, who is currently attending University in the UK.
The evening concluded with a spirited fundraising auction, expertly conducted by Gregg Rippon (OK 1983). Kingswood extends heartfelt thanks to those who generously donated packages for the auction – Buffalo Kloof Conservancy, Kwandwe Private Game Reserve, and Mary Fowlds – as well as to all who bid so enthusiastically. Your support is invaluable and deeply appreciated.
A special word of gratitude must go to Ross Purdon, whose vision 18 months ago brought this dream to life. His dedication ensured that the event was not only memorable but historic. Truly, a stout effort.
The 2025 Kingswood Dinner at Lord’s will be remembered as a night of fellowship, inspiration, and pride, an occasion that celebrated both history and the enduring spirit of the Kingswood community.
