On Sunday, 3 August 2025, Kingswood College will host its inaugural Beacon Ceremony; a moment of quiet reflection and gratitude in honour of Kingswoodians who have passed on.
The ceremony will take place at 09h30 in the Kingswood Memorial Chapel, and marks the beginning of what is hoped to become a meaningful tradition in the life of the school.
Rooted in remembrance, the Beacon Ceremony aims to celebrate the lives of those who once walked Kingswood’s halls, learnt in its classrooms, taught in it’s classrooms and carried its values into the world. As the name suggests, the event serves as a symbolic lighting of a beacon, a gesture that honours the legacy and light left behind by each individual.
The ceremony will coincide with Kingswood’s annual Chapel Anniversary Service, where we honour those Kingswoodians who lost their lives during war time. This meaningful alignment allows us to reflect not only on those who gave their lives in service, but also on the many others who have left a lasting mark on our school and community.
Towards the close of the ceremony, families and loved ones will be invited to light a candle in memory of those they have lost. Afterwards, they may lay a rose at the Garden of Remembrance fountain.
For the purpose of the inaugural service, we will be including Kingswoodians who have passed on from 2023 to date. Invitations to this ceremony are reliant on information that we receive – therefore, if you know of any Kingswoodians who have passed away and do not appear on our In Memoriam page, please get in touch with us.
The idea behind the Beacon Ceremony is simple, yet deeply significant: to pause as families and a school community and acknowledge those who are no longer with us, but whose presence is still felt in memory and spirit.
